18.10.2024

On October 7th and 8th, we held our First International Conference of the Spanish Society of Cellular Senescence, SENESCEL, in Santiago de Compostela.
The conference was a great success with a packed auditorium. We had 110 investigators coming not only from Spain but also from Great Britain, Italy, Switzerland, France, Austria, Argentina, Belgium, Chile, USA, Portugal, Sweden and Ireland.

We had the privilege of counting with: Carlos Anerillas (CBM, Madrid, SP), Jose Alberto López (CIC, Salamanca, SP), Marta Montes (UNAV, Pamplona, SP), Sofía Ferreira-Gonzalez (MRC-CRM, Edinburgh, UK), Han Li (Institut Pasteur, Paris, FR), Elsa Logarinho (i3S, Oporto, PT), Maria Abad (Altos Labs, Cambridge, UK), Daniel Muñoz-Espin (CRUK, Cambridge, UK), Manuel Serrano (Altos Labs, Cambridge, UK), Myriam Gorospe (NIA-NIH, Baltimore, US), Björn Schumacher (CECAD, Cologne, DE) and Masashi Narita (CRUK, Cambridge, UK) as invited speakers.

The opening keynote lecture was given by Manuel Serrano, from Altos Labs, and the closing keynote lecture was given by Myriam Gorospe, from NIA-NIH.
Myriam also participated on a science outreach activity together with Manuel Collado, lead organizer of the conference and President of SENESCEL, in which they had a conversation on
biomedical research on aging and what it can offer us to increase healthspan. This was an open and free activity with general public attending that is part of a series of science
outreach activities co-organized by SENESCEL and @ColladoLab and hosted by AFUNDACION.

We also had 19 short talks and 38 posters, 12 of which were presented as poster teasers.

We also organized a free cultural guided visit to the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela that many of the participants enjoyed at the end of the conference.
We are grateful to all the speakers, attendees and our collaborators and sponsors, especially The Fundación Pública Galega Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria de Santiago de Compostela (FIDIS), Afundación-Obra Social ABANCA, Axencia Galega de Coñecemento en Saúde (ACIS), The Company of Biologists, Altos Labs, HaploX, Rejuversen and Promega.
